Lungfish have persisted for thousands of years almost unchanged. Early fossils of this highly specialized fish go back over 350 million years. Of the six remaining species of lungfish, four are in tropical Africa, one in South America and one in Australia. The largest and most primitive of these 6 species is the Australian lungfish.
