Pilchard

The pilchard is more commonly known in its juvenile state, the sardine. Sardines have been harvested by humans for centuries and have been greatly exploited. The pilchard is very similar to the herring, only slightly smaller. It has silvery colouring, with larger scales then those of the herring. Feeding on plankton, the pilchard live in enormous shoals which are organized by age. Caught in the Atlantic these sardines await the Portuguese market. [BM] {FW}
