Having no front teeth the manatee depends on the split, prehensile lips to tear at branches hanging over the water and to pull weeds from the waterways. Manatees will eat almost any vegetation. These gentle creatures are known to be quite inquisitive, greeting people on the shorelines and visiting fishing boats. They live in solitude or in groups which may number up to 20 individuals.
