Depending on the species ground squirrels will eat anything from nuts and leaves to carrion, mice and birds. Ground squirrels are very alert and are awake during daylight hours. The majority of ground squirrels are found in North America, with several species proliferating in Africa, Asia and Europe. This squirrel, found in North America, is a red squirrel.
