Depending on the species, ground squirrels range in size from 8 to 31 inches, with a tail which is 1/3 to 1/2 the length of the body. The tail is not as fluffy as the tree squirrel and the coat is yellowish-grey often marked by spots or stripes. The front legs are short and the hind legs are long with large feet.
