Sorry, No Picture! Gerbils, like the kagaroo rat and jerboa, leap in great bounds when travelling. It is assumed that this form of locomotion conserves energy and helps the rodent stay cool as it searches for the often minimal supply of food. Gerbils are also able to conserve water in their bodies--a necessary feature of a desert inhabitant. These burrowing rodents are found primarily in Africa.
