Gerbil 2
Gerbils, like the kagaroo rat and jerboa, leap
in great bounds when travelling. It is assumed that this form of locomotion conserves energy and helps the
rodent stay cool as it searches for the often minimal supply of food. Gerbils are also able to
conserve water in their bodies--a necessary feature of a desert inhabitant. These burrowing rodents
are found primarily in Africa. However, several species also live in parts of Asia.
