Black Bear 3
Mating once every three years, the female black bear gives birth to her young during the
months of January or February. Being in the middle of her winter sleep, she awakes long enough
to bite through the umbilical cord. There are usually 2 to 3 cubs in a litter, which nurse and sleep
for the first 2 months of life. The American black bear is found throughout North America. Back to Black Bear.
