Polecat 2
The polecat is found in a wide variety of habitats
where small mammals can be taken as prey. The diet of the polecat includes mice, birds, eggs
and reptiles. Polecats are also infamous for killing poultry; even the name polecat is derived from
the french words 'poule chat', meaning chicken cat. These carnivores are known to kill more than
is necessary. Polecats mate in the spring, producing a litter of 5
to 6 young. Polecats are found throughout Europe.
