There are 3 species of hyaena: the spotted hyaena, the brown hyaena and the striped hyaena. Spotted hyaenas are the largest and most common. They reach lengths of approximately 5 ft with a 13 inch tail. Standing 36 inches high at the shoulder, the hyaena is characterized by its extremely powerful jaws and large head.
