There are well over 100 species of domesticated dog. Fossilized remains suggest that domesticated dogs existed 10,000 years ago in Asia, Europe and Egypt. Little is known for certain concerning the origin of the domesticated dog; it is perhaps an ancestor of a wolf or jackal, or perhaps a wild dog which is now extinct.
