Wapiti
In the 17th Century the Shawanee Indians of North America gave the name 'Wapiti' to a member
of the deer family with which they were well aquainted. At that time it is estimated that there were
some 10 million wapiti living in North America. Since that time their numbers have dropped to
approximately half a million. Sharing similarities to the red deer, the wapiti is larger in size,
reaching 9 feet in length and standing 5 feet in height at the shoulder.MORE!
