Both reindeer and caribou are unique as they are the only members of the deer family
to have females with antlers. It has been discovered that social hierarchy is determined by antler size. During
mating season the buck with the largest antlers is sure to mate, bossing over less mature bucks.
After the rut, however, the male reindeer looses its antlers and the females become dominant. In
this way the calf and mother are sure to have sufficient food.MORE!
