Pere David's Deer
The unique deer known as Pere David's deer have survived the 20th Century with the
determination of several individuals. They were first discovered by the French missionary and
naturalist for which they are named, Pere David, in 1865. A herd was held captive in the
Emperor's hunting park in Peking. So rare was this animal that not even the Chinese knew of its
