The coat is blue-grey. The cow nilgai is much smaller, has no horns and the coat is soft brown. Both male and female nilgai have white patches on their throats, tails, ears, and cheeks. Nilgai rest during the warmest hours of the day, and graze when the sun is not at its highest. Nilgai form herds of 4 to 10 members.
