The spring rut leaves the males exhausted and vulnerable to predators. The calves are also vulnerable to predators and the harsh environment into which they are born. There is a high mortality rate among both the rams and the calves. On average, females outlive their male counterpart by 5 to 6 years. The herd moves constantly in search of pasture land, from swampy valleys to mountain valleys. [BM] {FW}
