Evolutionary History
It is believed that the basic anatomical pattern of the backbone was first
developed in fishes about 400 million years ago (Devonian period).
It was to follow that amphibians and reptiles were to evolve from fish, as
the fins became limbs and the gills became lungs. Theory continues that mammals
developed from reptiles 60 to 70 million years ago (beginning of the Cenozoic era).
