The 5 species of Diving Petral range in size from 17 to 26cm. They have compact bodies and short wings. The Diving Petral prefers the cooler waters of the Southern Hemisphere. These water birds are nocturnal and feed on marine organisms. The Diving Petral dives several feet into the water to capture prey and like the penguin uses its wings to swim through the water.
