Woodpecker
There are about 200 species belonging to the woodpecker family. Woodpeckers can be found in
wooded areas around the world with the exception of Australia, Madagascar and oceanic
islands. Reaching lengths of 2 ft, woodpeckers are characterised by their 2 toes which face
backwards, their strong tail feathers used for balance, their thick, shock absorbent skulls
and their often beautiful plumage. Note these characteristics in this male Downy woodpecker. MORE!
