Piculet
There are 8 species of piculet which form part of the woodpecker family. Small in size, the
piculet ranges from 3 to 5 inches in length. Like other woodpeckers, the piculet has a toe
facing backwards, to ensure solid footing. Most piculets have grey or green plumage with
patterned underparts. Like the flicker and wryneck, the piculet has a long tongue which is
helpful in scooping insects out of holes and crevices. Piculets are found in Asia, central
Africa, Central America and South America.
