Thornbill
There are approximately 17 species of thornbill. These small, tit-like birds, are found in
Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea. Ranging in size from 3.5 to 4.5 inches in length, the
thornbill has a small, fine beak and pointed wings. The plumage is dark on the uppersurface
and lighter underneath. The thornbill is known to build an upper compartment, located on top
of the nest. This second nest is infrequently used by the thornbill and the purpose remains
a mystery.
