Starlings are common birds, inhabiting both rural and urban areas. The common starling is 8.5 inches in length, has a short tail, wide, pointed wings and a solid body. Throughout the year the plumage of the starling changes considerably. In the winter starlings will have dark, iridescent green plumage highlighted by light spots, in the spring the bone coloured bill turns bright yellow and the plumage is inky black with no markings.
