There are approximately 23 species of pitta. These shy, quiet birds are some of the most colourful in the world. With large patches of colour such as green, red, yellow and blue, the pitta bird is brilliant. Having long legs, large feet and a short tail the pitta spends most of its time on the forest floor searching for insects. Pittas are not large birds, reaching only 10 inches in length. Two species of pittas are found in Africa. The rest live in southeast Asia. [BM] {FW}
