Hoatzin
Like early birds, which inhabited the earth millions of years ago,
the young hoatzin have two claws on each wing. The young use these claws to crawl around
trees on all fours, much like a quadreped. As the hoatzin matures these
claws are lost. However, the adult birds commonly use their wings to aid in climbing. The
wing muscles are underdeveloped in the adults and as a result the wings droop below the
body. Hoatzins have small heads, thin necks and long crests. This bird is found in South
America.
