HELP INDEX NEXT UP PREVIOUS FEEDBACK ATG Behaviour and Diet

The main diet of all vultures is carrion (dead animals). Turkey Vultures will also eat rotting fruits and vegetables, but this is only a supplement to their main diet. They will eat dead mice or snakes, but usually they feed on larger dead animals like deer. Now and then, they will feed on dead farm animals lying in fields. Highways provide a steady menu of "road kill" for them. To find dead animals, Turkey Vultures soar in wide circles. They are easy to recognize in flight. Their wings are in a wide "V" shape, and their wing tips curl upward in the air. Their vision is excellent, and sometimes they are so high up they can't be seen from the ground. That's why people say they appear out of thin air when something is dead or dying. They actually do! As mentioned, they like the cliffs and rocky points of southern Ontario. Cliffs make it hard for predators to reach their nests, and they also make great launching spots for soaring over the landscape looking for something rotten to eat. MORE! [LH] {BI} {EH}
