Fledglings
In 70 to 80 days the chicks grow their flight feathers and learn to fly.
Like all young birds busy
growing their adult plumage, they are referred to as "fledglings". Once
they've grown all their
flight feathers, they are said to be "fully fledged". During those
eleven weeks in the nest, the
young birds often turn their backs to the sun and spread their wings to
sunbathe. If they are
disturbed in their nest, they hiss loudly, throw up, and attack the
intruder with their beaks.
Juvenile Turkey Vultures, leaving the nest, are lighter brown than the
adults. Their heads are
brown. Maybe that makes it easier for them to hide. Perhaps the bright
red head of an adult is a
sign that an individual is mature and ready to mate, so it develops
later in life. MORE!
