Condor
The largest flying bird in the world is the condor. Having a wingspan of 10 ft the condor is
small is comparison with its extinct relative the "Teratornis incredilis". This relative,
which was once found in North America, had a wingspan of 17 ft. The 2 species of condor are
the California condor and the Andean condor. Both are characterized by their featherless,
skin covered head and necks like that of vultures. These gruesome creatures have sharply
hooked beaks and black plumage with a distinct white collar for the Andean condor. The
California condor found in western United States, once common now edges on extinction
through urbanization, poisoning and illegal shooting. The Andean condor has not suffered the
same fate and can be found from Patagonia to Venezuela.
