Sand Grouse
Closely related to pigeons, sand grouse are only slightly smaller, reaching 9 to 16 inches
in length. Similar in body shape to pigeons, they can be distinguished by their short,
feather covered legs. These birds live in very hot, dry environments. This grouse is
dependent on thick protective feathers to sheild the sun and daily water intake. There are
16 species of sand grouse, found in Africa, Madagascar, southern Europe and southern Asia.
