The first of two species is found in Africa, southern Europe, parts of Asia and Australia. It reaches 20 inches and has a gently curved beak. The plumage is green, brown and black with white underparts. The second species is found south of Argentina. Reaching only 10 inches; the plumage is dark with white underparts. These nocturnal birds can be found in wetlands. They are not successful fliers and will fly only short distances. [BM] {FW}
