The New Zealand snipe is a member of the snipe family of wading birds. Like other snipe, the New Zealand snipe has long, pointed bill, short neck and legs that are not very long. The eyes are well set back and the plumage is mottled in varying shades of brown and white. The New Zealand snipe is known to nest in the burrows deserted by other birds. [BM] {FW}
