Trumpeter Swan
Swans form close family units. The male swan is called a cob, the female a pen and the young
are called cygnets. Swans live an average of 20 years in the wild and up to 50 years in
captivity. Swans have gained considerable attention through the near extinction of the
Trumpeter Swan (Olor buccinator) shown here. In 1935 there were fewer than 100 left. There are now several thousand.
