Great Plains Toad

This photograph reveals the characteristic pale olive to brown colour of this species. The smooth skin is highlighted by darker flecks of colour. This nocturnal toad ranges in size from 5 to 11 cm. When frightened the great plains toad inflates with air and lowers its head to the ground. The great plains toad ranges from southern Alberta to the southern edges of Texas and California. This toad prefers grasslands and prairie habitats. [BM] {AS}
