Pyrosoma
Pyrosoma is a colony of sea-squirts. These sea-squirts join
together and create free-swimming colonies ranging in size from 10 cm to several meters in
length. The sea-squirt colony has a cylindrical shape, often comprised of several thousand individual
sea-squirts. These individual sea-squirts are embedded in a rough jelly for adhesion. The most
fascinating aspect about pyrosoma is its luminescent quality. It is believed that these simple animals
are related to the earliest vertebrates.
