Subphylum Cephalochordata

Sorry, No Picture! Cephalochordates, like the Lancelet, have a stiffening rod called a notochord. This notochord, a rod-like cord, runs through the center of the body. Like the spine in higher vertebrates, the notochord acts as the primary supporting structure of the body. Lower chordates are characterized by the existence of a notochord. notochords also occur in the embryos of the higher vertebrates. [BM] {RH} {ED}
