Leaf Insect
(Order Orthoptera Family Phasmatidae)
There are approximately 25 species of leaf insect. The leaf insect, which is also commonly called
walking leaf, has large, leathery forewings which lie edge on edge creating a vein pattern similar to
a leaf. When young they are a red colour, turning green as they feed on leaves. As adults they are
approximately 60 mm long. This well camouflaged insect, related to the walkingstick, ranges from
India to the Fiji Islands.
