Underwing Moth
(Family Noctuidae Subfamily Catocalinae)
These strong, night flying moths are medium sized. With solid patterns across their brown-
grey forewings they are well camouflaged by their front wings. The underwing
moth, like all other Noctuidae have a pair of auditory organs on each side of the rear thorax. This
specialized hearing is so acute to high frequency that it can hear bat cheeps. Through this feature the
underwing Moth can evade bats as they share the night sky.
