Swallowtail Caterpillar (Family Papilionoidae)

"Caterpillar" is the common name given to the immature stage of the butterfly. A caterpillar is a larvae. Those caterpillars which belong to the family lepidoptera are commonly characterized by their solid, cylindrical bodies. Many caterpillars within this family have soft hairs or spines, on occasion these sting to the touch but generally they are harmless.
