Satyrid Butterfly
(Order Lepeidoptera Family Satyridae)
There are some 3000 species belonging to the Satyridae family world wide. They are commonly called
Satyrs or Browns. They are often dull brown or grey, having a wingspan from 25 to 73 mm. They can
usually be recognized by distinct eyespots on the wings. They are not very successful fliers and
generally remain in one specific area. This photograph of a
satyrid butterfly was taken in Costa Rica.
