Owl Butterfly 2
(Order Lepeidoptera Genus Caligo)
As butterflies, the owl
butterfly, is marked by two false eye spots on the underside of the hindwings. These spots serve as
intimidation, as the spines of the larval stage, for predators. The protected owl butterfly has a
wingspan of 156 mm and is found in the lowland rainforests of South and Central America. This photograph
was taken in Costa Rica.
