Noctuid Moth Caterpillar
(Family Noctuidae)
The Noctuidae family of moths is the largest family, with over 25,000 species around the world. All
Noctuidae are nocturnal and for this reason they are also commonly known as Owlet Moths. In their
larval caterpillar form they can be quite a problem. Both cutworms, which cut through stems at
ground level, and army worms, which move together, devastating entire crops, are well known
destructive pests from the Noctuidae family.
