Earwig
(Order Dermaptera)
There are approximately 1100 species of earwig world wide, some 18 species being found in North
America. This small to medium sized insect, with leathery body has received it's name from an age
old superstition that they crawled into the ears of unsuspecting or sleeping persons. Some tales even
suggest that they would chew through one's eardrum and brain with their rear pincers. The pincer-like
cerci can inflict a sharp pinch. Fortunately, the tales have no foundation. MORE!
