Firefly Beetle
(Order Coleoptera Family Lampyridae)
Firefly Beetles are characterized by their ability
to flash a small, bright light which notifies the other sex of their location. Each species has its own
personal rhythm of flashes. These small insects which range in size from 5 to 20mm are usually black
or brown with yellow or orange markings. They can easily be spotted in wet or swampy areas in the
spring and early summer. The larvae prefer the moist areas of swamp land and will often live on the
ground and under bark.
