There are approximately 1800 species of earthworm. These terrestrial animals can reach lengths of 3m. Characterized by their elongated, cylindrical bodies which taper at both ends, the body of the earthworm is divided into ringed segments. Between the 32 and 37 segments there is a slight bulge which is known as the clittellum. The clittellum is an organ used in the production of a slimy cocoon for the eggs. [BM] {EB}
