For many centuries leeches have been used for medicinal purposes. Those leeches belonging to the family Gnathobdellidae readily attach to humans. Leeches have been used in the treatment of mental illness, skin disease, whooping cough and tumours. Leeches applied to the temples have also been used in the treatment of headaches.
