Ribs
There are 12 pairs of ribs in the human ribcage. The
top seven pairs of ribs attached to the sternum with
cartilage are called the true ribs. The bottom five
pairs are called false ribs because they do not
connect directly to the sternum. The final two pairs of
ribs are called floating ribs because they do not
connect to the sternum. The
rib cage is responsible for protecting
other organs in the chest.
