Telemark Skiing

Since the 1980s, telemark skiing has combined elements of alpine and cross-country skiing to give skiers acess to more remote and rugged terrain. Not only are telemark skis thinner than downhill skis but the bindings allow the heel to be locked in place for downhill runs, and released for climbing or crossing flat sections. This sport is gaining in popularity, especially among mountaineers. [AM] {NR}
