A decline in cycling occurred with the rise of the automobile. The National Cyclist Union (NCU), the first sport cycling organization, was founded in 1878. In 1883, a recreational cycling organization, the Bicycle Touring Club, was founded. At that time they could boast 60,000 members, but late in the 20th Century it had only 25,000.
