Ballooning began in 1783 when the Montgolfier brothers flew their balloon in France. Ballooning was used for military and scientific work and became popular as a recreational sport in 1906 when the American publisher James Gordon Bennett offered a trophy for long distance flights. The Belgians, who were successful at this event, offered the trophy from 1924 to 1939 when it was discontinued. MORE! [BM] {ED}
