The worlds first automobile race took place in France in 1894. The winning speed was about 17.6 km/h (11 mph). Winning speeds today are somewhere above 224km/h (140 mph). There are many different types of car racing, some of the more important include Formula 1 (or Grand Prix), P.P.G. Indy Car Championship, and Winston Cup Stock car racing.
