Night of Flight
There were, however, many who opposed the teachings of Mohammed and feared the power he might receive as he gained greater followings.
At the age of 53, Mohammed fled from Mecca to escape his predetermined death.
This event is known to Muslims as The Night of Flight.
Mohammed returned to Mecca eight years later with an army of 10 000.
He destroyed the 360 idols within that city and the city converted to the Islamic faith.
He said: "I, last of the Prophets, am sent with a sword! The sword is the key to heaven and hell,
all who draw it in the cause of faith will be rewarded." This photograph features an Islamic cemetary in Cairo.
