Those cults that have worshipped these primary gods have done so with zeal and emotional fervour ensuring their continued worship through the ages. It is the cults which surround the worship of Vishnu and Siva which continue to the present as the main forms of Hinduism. Ironically there was rivalry between these two gods at first, as is usual in Hinduism, but they united their ways and each was regarded as the 'personal' form of the Absolute.
